Facing the Caribbean Sea, the Sierra Nevada, and the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta. Ciénaga is one of only 17 heritage-listed towns in Colombia. Thanks to its wonderful geographical location, historical, architectural, and cultural richness, it was used as inspiration by Gabriel García Márquez in his many writings of magical realism.

At an altitude of only 3 meters above sea level, and an average temperature of 34 ° C, this Caribbean town was once one of the most important, thriving, and progressive towns in all of Colombia. This strategic town was part of the banana bonanza during the start of the 20th century and is well known as the location of the Banana Massacre of 1928. In which between 47 and 2000 banana workers (no one knows the true number) were killed for striking against undignified working conditions. You’ll learn the true history behind who ordered this massacre of these workers and the great impact it had on the region.

Not only will you visit the most important architectural landmarks, but you’ll delve into the culture and enjoy a group of local musicians and dancers performing in their colorful typical costumes. With the wonderful performance of these dancers along with their powerful drums, you’ll come to understand the importance of carnival for maintaining the traditions of this community.
