Your journey to 3 of the 17 heritage towns of Colombia will start with a relaxing drive of approximately 3 hours to arrive in the most beautiful Colombian town, Barichara.  Known the world over for its perfectly preserved colonial architecture, peaceful cobbled roads, amazing views, artisan workshops, and wonderful artisan shops. Your tour will include visiting stunning churches, remarkable chapels, striking graveyards, parks, sculptures, incredible views of the Suarez Canyon, and stopping in the best-handcrafted artisan shops where you can pick up a unique souvenir.

Following your time in the picturesque town of Barichara, it’s onto the 2nd stop on today’s tour of heritage towns. Founded in 1683, Socorro is one of the most important towns in the history of Colombia and was where the very first steps of independence were discussed and taken during a small uprising in 1781 against the oppression of the Spanish rule. Taking place 25 years before the first failing rebellions of Simon Bolivar and is attributed to the start of the revolt that finally saw the Spanish leave Colombia in 1819. While walking the streets of this heritage town, where the beginning of the end of the Spanish rule started 260 years ago, you’ll uncover the true history of this great nation.

Next, you’ll start making the journey back to Bucaramanga with one more stop at the 3rd heritage town in this region of Santander, Giron.  Actually, a part of the metropolitan area of Bucaramanga, this small town is known for its Spanish colonial architecture of whitewashed buildings, large wooden doors, cobblestone streets, and clay-tiled roofs. Giron was declared a National Heritage Monument in 1963 and is where amongst other wonderful sites, you’ll discover the beautiful 15th-century church Basilica San Juan Bautista.
