The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a simply beautiful and breathtaking location; full of mountains, jungles, and rivers. In this tour, you’ll be visiting some of the descendants of the Tyrone Indigenous people who lived many years ago in what is now known as the Lost City.

In this day tour, you’ll enjoy a swim in an ancestral waterfall called Matuna, and walk through jungle trails covered in natural foliage.

The indigenous guides on these tours are natives of this region and will lead you to houses of friends and family who will welcome you like a long lost relative. All while you are enjoying the indigenous crafts and a wonderful breakfast and lunch made by a woman from this community.

WIWA Indigenous Refuge – Gotsezhy

You’ll be collected in a 4×4 at approximately 5:30am from your hotel in Santa Marta. From which you’ll enjoy a journey for around 2 hours on both tar-sealed and dirt roads until you reach a Wiwa Indigenous Community called Gotsezhy.

Once here you’ll see many WIWA Indigenous people, along with the village school and many houses (Indigenous Bohíos). You’ll be able to interact with community members and observe important sites of the Gotsezhy People.

Next, you’ll start on a short ecological walk for approximately 20 minutes (0.6mi / 1 km) to reach the Wiwa Gotsezhy Refuge, a small indigenous community made up of several families. Here you will feel like you’re at home, as they are all so very friendly and helpful. They’ll be explaining and showing you how they have been able to coexist with nature for hundreds of years.

At approximately 8:00 am you’ll be sitting down to enjoy a wonderful breakfast prepared by community woman, which will be based on your eating habits and the delicious indigenous cuisine of this place. Following your breakfast, you’ll visit some ancestral and cultural places under the guidance of the MAMO (spiritual leader) and the indigenous guide, who will give you spiritual talks and exposition of crafts typical of the Wiwa.

Around 12pm you’ll enjoy lunch and a bit of a rest in the hammocks, before enjoying a refreshing swim in the ancestral Waterfall Matuna.

After an hour or so in the amazing waters of this magical river and waterfall, you’ll return to Gotsechy to take more last minute photos with the MAMO and the indigenous families that live there. Once you have all the photos your camera can hold you’ll start the journey back to the Gotsezhy Village where the 4 × 4 Vehicle will be waiting for you to take you back to Santa Marta.
